Then in Western Australia, Dave Kennett shows us some of his dowsing and planting techniques at a field day; and wheat farmers Geoff and Elaine Scholz explain their methods of crystal farming, which have all been a great sucess.
2.00 - 3.00pm Big Bucks, Big Pharma
Big Bucks, Big Pharma pulls back the curtain on the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry to expose the insidious ways that illness ... all » is used, manipulated, and in some instances created, for capital gain. Focusing on the industry's marketing practices, media scholars and health professionals help viewers understand the ways in which direct-to-consumer (DTC) pharmaceutical advertising glamorizes and normalizes the use of prescription medication, and works in tandem with promotion to doctors. Combined, these industry practices shape how both patients and doctors understand and relate to disease and treatment. Ultimately, Big Bucks, Big Pharma challenges us to ask important questions about the consequences of relying on a for-profit industry for our health and well-being.
3.30 - 4.30pm Alternative Medicine - The Evidence of Herbs
Kathy Sykes continues her investigation of Alternative Medicine, this time looking at the ancient practice of herbalism - and discovers that some herbs do indeed have powerful healing properties. Indeed, some may even offer answers to medical conditions that baffle modern science.
Kathy travels through South Africa, Germany and Britain. Everywhere there are distinct herbal traditions, each with their unique practices and distinctive plants. But one claim underlies them all – herbs have remarkable properties that make them powerful medicines.
In South Africa, she learns about a herb which is being touted as a new weapon in the fight against HIV-AIDS. She listens to the stories of patients and their carers who claim it is saving lives.
In Britain she meets people who are pinning their hopes on herbs – some with remarkable results. And in Germany she meets the scientists who are taking them apart and submitting them to rigorous clinical trials. Out of this has emerged at least eight ‘super herbs’; herbs that in clinical trials performed so well that may give their pharmaceutical competitors a run for their money.
So, what’s their secret? Working with fellow scientists, Kathy discovers that plants contain much more than a single – or even two or three – active ingredients. They are enormously complex chemical cocktails that have medicinal properties modern pharmaceuticals simply can’t reproduce.
5.00 - 6.00pm Zapatista
January 1, 1994: The day the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) comes into effect. A few minutes after midnight in Southeastern Mexico, several thousand Mayan soldiers take over haf the state of Chiapas, declaring a war against the global corporate power they say rules Mexico. They call themselves the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN).
Zapatista is the definitive look at the uprising in Chiapas. It is the story of a Mayan peasant rebellion armed with sticks and their word against a first world military. It is the story of a global movement that has fought 175,000 federal troops to a standstill and transformed Mexican and international political culture forever.
6.30 - 7.30pm Inside Burma - Land of Fear
John Pilger and David Munro go undercover in one of the world's most isolated, and extraordinary countries, Burma, which Amnesty ... all » International calls 'a prison without bars'. They discover slave labour preparing for tourism and foreign investment.
