rites of passage for young men and women

In our increasingly secular world, one of the things missing in daily life it seems is a certain meaning, a reason to live. it is said that shopping is the new religion, while this may be so for many, it still is as a means to lasting satisfaction doomed to failure. In the life of a young woman the onset of puberty is marked physically by menstruation. This very special time is seldom met with celebration. What is there for our young men ? In some countries it is just like military service that teenagers become monks for a period of 3 months. I was thinking that well ok. we can't just insist that such a line be taken in this country , but maybe there is somthing that could be put in place and now that the green party have a bit of power, they can help to bridge the gap that exists between looking after our spiritual wellfare and all the other aspects of living peacefully on the planet. I'm just not too sure what form this might take, i can imagine though taking my daughter up to tara hill, or lough crew, followed by a gathering of female friends and family members, showering of gifts and good wishes for a wholesome womanhood . For when will we learn to venerate places of spiritual importance and higher vibration such as Tara if we ourselves, benumbed by the t.v. video games, loaded by inherited cynicism and fear of the unknown, no longer value what is noble in ourselves. How do we pass on real values grounded in reality, i don't know, any ideas ?
